Town in Berkshire. It is really a racecourse with a town that has grown up around it. It is famous for is week of racing in July featuring Ladies Day. Ascot definitievy has it's nose up in the air.

An ascot is also a wide scarf or cravat which you pin around your neck. It was named after the Berkshire racetrack, as mgriffithsuk noted.

In British English, a brand name (and eponym) for a type of small gas water heater, usually serving a single tap (sometimes with a spout emerging directly from the heater itself) and ignited from a pilot light when that tap is run. Has provided copious hot water and occasional carbon monoxide poisoning to countless dodgy bedsits, student houses and other low-cost housing, although electric versions are now becoming more common.

The Ascot brand (made by the Ascot Gas Water Heater Ltd) proper was set up by one Bernard Friedman who introduced the heaters into Britain from the USA in 1932. For probably the majority ofthe housing stock in the country in the mid-20th century it was the first source of "on tap" hot water - previously water would have been heated on the fire or kitchen range.

Should you be looking at places to live or stay, bear in mind that an Ascot could be a bit more expensive to run than a system with a boiler or immersion heater and a tank (although more flexible if your hot water needs vary a lot) and make doubly sure that the heater (and any other gas appliance) has proper, unobstructed ventilation.

Synonyms: geyser (English midlands and north - thanks to wertperch)

ASCOT stands for Associated Students forCareer Orientation in Telecommunication. It is a student-run organization at MSU (Michigan State University) located within the College of Communication Arts & Sciences

http://ascot.msu.edu

The goal of this organization is to provide as many networking opportunities as possible with big companies specifically looking for TC and TC-related majors. They also try to provide opportunities to gain leadership skills and experience to all of our members.

ASCOT is also a great way to meet fellow TC majors. Some of ASCOT's past events have included resume workshops led by TC or HR professionals, technical workshops led by executive board members and faculty or professionals, company tours, company presentations, broom ball, ice cream socials and also a “casual-setting” career fair called Convergence during the month of Feburary.

Most of these events are “members-only.” ASCOT likes to give their members the privilege of having the most out of their networking opportunities. Members are invited to all events, and whenever we have company presentations, their resumes are put on a CD to give to these potential employers. ASCOT also keep their members’ resumes on their web site (http://ascot.msu.edu).
