Goyaman originates from a popular Japanese TV comedy/drama called 'Chura-San', a 15 minute program about life in Okinawa shown twice a day on NHK. Chura San's father (Masaaki Sakai, of 'Monkey Magic' fame) is a taxi driver who tries to make money selling plastic Goyaman figurines, a traditional Okinawan vegetable dressed in a hat and cape. After much effort, the family realise that they can't sell any of the Goyaman figurines and end up with boxes of the stuff. Goyaman was such a funny concept that figurines and keyrings are now available throughout Japan.
