I didn't know such things when I was young

I didn't know that people could be dishonest for a living.

I didn't know that most people don't understand what "I love you" means

I didn't know dogs don't live forever

I didn't know people don't live forever

I didn't know not everyone has a warm bed to sleep in

I didn't know that I could learn so much and still not understand

I didn't know that I could earn high marks at school, and still get kicked out

I didn't know people got fired because of "budget cuts"

I didn't know I could be disliked for my skin color, my laugh, my life

I didn't know my parents didn't love each other

I didn't know people could get trapped in their own relationships

I didn't know I was unplanned

I didn't know other people don't think like me

I didn't know.... I was so young.
 

Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now the things I didn't know then.

I didn't know life could be truly wonderful,

despite hardships,

and sometimes because of them.
