The International Bitterness Unit (IBU) is a standardized measure of hop bitterness in beer. One IBU is equal to one milligram of isomerized alpha acid (the main bittering compounds in hops) per liter of beer.

The "IBU" can also be used to quantify the scholastic experiences of graduate students. For example, incurring significant student debt can add up to 5 IBU to a student's score, while repeatedly doing pointless menial tasks for one's supervisor can easily result in +6 IBU. Losing one's significant other because of excessive time spent in the library/laboratory can add a whopping 10-15 IBU. Graduate students could wear this score on their nametags at academic conferences, however this might conceivably be a career-limiting move.
