Real Name: Scott Monroe Sterling
Born: March 2, 1962

Better known as DJ Scott La Rock of the seminal hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions, with members KRS-ONE and D-Nice. He was born in the West Bronx and raised by his mother at the Sedgwick Housing Project. After attending St. Matthew Lutheran Elementary School and Our Savior Lutheran High School, he left for Vermont to attend Castleton State College and major in business administration. However, after recieving his bachelor's degree, he moved back to New York City to work for the New York City Human Resources Administration as a case worker.

During his free time during college and high school, Scott was an avid DJ and would often DJ for friend parties. Upon returning to New York he was able to land the DJ spot at Club Broadway International, where he was able to work with the rising crew the Ultra-Magnetic MC's. It's was through a member of the Ultra-Magnetic MC's, Ced-G, that Scott was able to meet a then homeless KRS-ONE (who also happended to be under the care of the Human Resources Admin.).

After inviting KRS-ONE to freestyle at Club Broadway a few times in the summer of 1984, Scott asked KRS to join a group he was starting called "Scott La Rock and the Celebrity Three" (Which also featured Levi167 and MC Quality). The were only able to release one track named "Advance" before getting into a dispute with their record label and being released from their contract. The songs subject matter (preventing nuclear war) way far away from the current rap climate of women and money. Not only were they pushing forward a strong message but they also called out MCs to show their mic skills.

After the Celebrity Three had been released from their contract, both Levi167 and MC Quality left and Scott and KRS changed their name to The Boogie Down Crew. They were approached by Sleeping Bag Records to produce an an already written album, but after completing the project they realised that they retained no rights to any of their work. Soon afterwards, they vowed to maintain complete control of the production of the albums and changed their name to Boogie Down Productions.

The following year Scott began producing and writing the beginning of what would be BDP's first album, "Criminal Minded", while helping KRS record and release their track "South Bronx". However, it was until early 1987 that Criminal Minded hit the streets. Their first album was an almost total departure from the current rap scene, and the response was huge. Scott and KRS recieved almost instant fame in the New York hip-hop scene, and they began to see the roots of their conscious style growing.

Sadly, in August of the same year, Scott La Rock was shot and killed while trying to break up a dispute in the Bronx. While many thought this to be the end of BDP, KRS-ONE continued to MC under the BDP name and still gives respect to his friend DJ Scott La Rock.
