The name given to the southern part of The Netherlands, territory accumulated by the French Duke of Burgundy in the 15th century and eventually inherited by Charles V, from the 16th Century Protestant Reformation (when the northern half broke away from Spanish rule) until handed over to Austria as a prize in The War of the Spanish Succession.
