Abbreviation for unchecked; used by crossword constructors/editors to
indicate a letter that is only part of one word, by being between black
squares and/or the edge of the puzzle in the other direction. Most commonly
used with cryptic crosswords, since American-style crosswords normally
don't permit unches.
