Beneficial bacteria are harmless bacteria which are useful in many chemical processes, including digestion of food and duplicating DNA. Beneficial bacteria are also used to keep plants and animals healthy in agriculture. Yogurt, sour cream, and some types of cheeses are created in part using this type of bacteria.

Due to the overwhelming amount of antibiotics we use today, some people are encouraged to eat foods containing probiotics to aid in digesting food, synthesize vitamins, process hormones, and recover from illness.
