The Demeter Fragrance Library is a small store in
New York City’s
East Village which sells a line of 165 very unusual perfumes. The company is the brainchild of one
Christopher Brosius, a former taxi driver, perfume salesman, and employee of
Kiehl's, a skin care company. Tired of mainstream brand-name perfumes, he concocted a whimsical line of fragrances that mimic everyday things and places. Ranging from the unusual to the absolutely insane, some of his scents include:
Dirt (the biggest seller)
Earthworm
Mildew
Sushi
Fig Leaf
Lily of the Valley
Play-Doh
Suntan Lotion
String Bean
Sawdust
Steam Room

No,
I am not making this up. See for yourself: Demeter fragrances can be found at a number of stores in the Northeast and
Washington DC, including some
Nordstroms. It’s even popped up in
London. The line has been a success, and the scent Snow won two
Fifi Awards, an honor in the perfume industry.
Brosius is currently working on
Puppy and
Top of a Baby’s Head. But don’t hold your breath waiting for
Puke or
Formaldehyde, because there are some lines he won’t cross…
