The
Diet of
Regensburg, 1541 was another attempt to find a
religious compromise between the
Catholics and the
Protestants. The
Pope sent
Gasparo Contarini a sympathetic
Cardinal. Bucer and
Melanchthon represented the Lutherans.
Despite some early success the Diet ended in failure. The last chance for compromise had failed and in the early 1540s Charles V came to believe that force was necessary.
