This project is an extension of Interstate H-3 across the Koolau mountain range on the island of
Oahu, near the city of
Honolulu. The tunnel project consists of two tunnels, two lanes each, with shoulders, and as a "curved wall"
horseshoe shaped configuration. The tunnels are approximately 5,000 feet long and contain the latest state-of-the-art technology in
ventilation, lighting,
traffic control and monitoring and emergency life support systems. This extension of H-3 was opened to traffic on December 12,
1997. This Project was awarded the 1998 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award by the American Society of
Civil Engineers (
ASCE). The tunnels are named the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels in recognition of the former
DOT's Highways Chief's 52 years of dedicated service.
