It's time for another Lost Gems of Yesteryear: Odyssey Two update. Executive summary: Not much has changed, so this will likely be the last update before the official end of the quest on July 22nd.

  • We seem to have topped out with 10 e2 users nominating a total of 39 writeups to the quest. I will list them below in one last bid to give them exposure. I am also listing them because I got my AngularJS web scraper working to collect the data, so that makes it easy to give more details.
  • 31 unique authors are represented.
  • Approximately 108 votes have been cast on these writeups during the quest period, ranging from 1 to 7 new votes per node. Reputation changes range from -1 to +6, with the mode and median for the reputation change dropping down to +1 after a bit of apparent downvote action. The net change in reputation is currently +68.

The presumptive final Everything2 Lost Gems of Yesteryear: Odyssey Two writeup list

I think we're done adding writeups, but you can still read them and vote on them, if you haven't done so already.

For the data collection, I wrote my first AngularJS application, 200 lines of JavaScript. I am mighty! Or not. But I set myself a challenge and I was able to meet it, and to learn a little bit about Angular and jQuery, so go me.

On the job search front, I had two positive phone screens this week, with one follow-up on-site interview set for late next week. Also, go me! OTOH, I had another rejection because of a lack of specific technical skills. So it goes.

Lots of gun-related tragedy in the news. Much sadness for the families of all who have died by violence. I noticed SF author John Scalzi musing* on his Whatever blog about the death of Philando Castile and how it contrasts to his own experience with police. His piece strikes similar notes to the daylog I wrote while recruiting eyeballs for On Blackness. I appear to win on variety of police encounters, but Scalzi wins on Scalziness, so I call it a draw.

Locally the news cycle was dominated by a Black Lives Matter protest which impacted the Toronto gay pride parade. There was a certain amount of outrage at BLMTO's actions, but the recent deaths in the US make it clear that the core issue of racial discrimination in policing does need to be given a full, thorough, and public examination, in hopes of preventing more violence and more victims.
