1952 English language
revision of the American Standard Version of the
Bible (
copyrighted in
1901-- itself a revision of the
King James Version of
1601). The
New Testament was published in
1946, and the
Old Testament completed in
1951. Authorized by the National Council of the Churches of Christ, which approved the work of 32
scholars (reviewed by 50
advisors of various
denominations). The Revised Standard Version Bible Committee is a continuing body, with representatives in the
United Kingdom, the
United States, and
Canada. It issued the second
edition of the New Testament in
1971.
Advances in interpretation and discovery of new texts in Semitic languages led to a complete revision in 1989. See
