In 1969, Julius and Harriet Wiggins wanted to unite the
deaf community within the
United States, which was not as
cohesive as
modern technology allows it to be today. With the help of their three teenagers, they started a four-page
newsletter from their New Jersey home. They also hoped to improve the
employment and
social conditions of
deaf people around the country by increasing
educational opportunities and readers'
literacy. Today,
Silent News is generally about 45 pages long and covers world, national, and community
news, as well as arts, sports, and health issues for the deaf and
deaf-blind communities.
