Umber Hulk is a subterranean monster in
Dungeons and Dragons, from the original
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons sourcebooks. In its original form, the body looked humanoid but huge. It had humanlike legs and arms, but the feet and hands were clawed and more insectlike. The head was that of a
giant beetle, with two large
compound eyes on the outside, two smaller
animal eyes in the center of the head, and a pair of nasty
mandibles surrounding the jaws. With these two sets of eyes, an Umber Hulk could confuse its
prey for an easy kill. It also had the ability to
tunnel through rock and was generally a very bad thing to encounter for most young
adventurers.
As
AD&D "matured", the Umber Hulk faded somewhat into
obscurity, becoming more
insectoid in appearance with each revision.
