When the voice on the other end
can’t be bothered to engage
and the dead air of the phone line
is the only sound you hear.
When the messages left for that special someone
go straight to voicemail
and when you get home
the first thing you check is your answering machine
and it stares back at you
with an unblinking eye
And you’re left to wonder and worry
About how you might have done something wrong
to silence something once and for all
that you always took for granted.
