Often a sign of depression, if genuine. The person suffering from self-hate will berate themself for every mistake and faux-pas and use it as confirmation of their uselessness.
Those who show appreciation for someone experiencing an episode of self-hate may well be rejected, as having no taste.
Not to be confused with self-deprecation or fishing for compliments. The self-hater wants other people to concur with their low opinion of themselves, not deny it.
