Literally, a crate that soap is shipped in. Figuratively, if someone is "on their soapbox," it means they intend to let loose with a polemic or some such piece of rhetoric. Comes from the old practice of impromptu speechmakers standing on soapboxes to give them a little height over the crowd they address.
