Commonly known as the Japan jacket in the US, this type of garment was created when American pilots stationed in the Pacific took their jackets to tailors to have different orientalia, like dragons, lotus flowers and ideograms, embroidered on the jackets, as souvenirs.
Skip to present-day Japan: Suka Jun jackets are back in style, marketed as the most American (and therefore popular) thing there is. Admittedly, some of the embroidered imagery is replaced with star-spangled banners, eagles, aviator's nose art and so on. The ultimate in kitsch and irony. But oh so cool.
