A
movie released in April 2003. Directed by
Gus Van Sant. Starring
Matt Damon and
Casey Affleck, two
road trippers/
hikers both named Gerry. Lamented by some as being too
boring, full of scenes that could be shortened or cut to eliminate
redundancy. The
cinematography is beautiful, painting visual and aural landscapes of the American
Southwest and
Argentina, allowing enough time for their total
absorption. Without having studied any theory or history of
film art, I feel qualified to classify this movie as contemporary
avant garde, a precursor to a new genre of film that will aim to
resensitize the audience to
subtlety, minimalizing shock value rather than trying to pack in one more
duplicitous plot twist than the last
psychological thriller.
Days before I graduated from high school, my English Literature teacher told us that the century of irony is over.
