In baseball jargon, there are seemingly endless ways to describe what kind of hitter a player is. Which kind are you?


bad-ball hitter - a hitter who will often hit balls pitched out of the strike zone.

banjo hitter - a hitter with very little power.

cleanup hitter - a hitter who bats fourth in the lineup.

clutch hitter - a hitter who often gets hits in crucial situations, such as when runners are on base, when there are two outs, or when runs are desperately needed.

contact hitter - a hitter who rarely walks or strikes out.

designated hitter - In some leagues, a hitter who permanently bats in place of a defensive player, but does not play in the field himself.

doubles hitter - a hitter who hits many doubles, but rarely hits home runs; same as a gap hitter.

fastball hitter - a hitter who hits fastballs hard but rarely hits breaking balls.

first-ball hitter - a hitter who usually hits the first pitch.

fly ball hitter - a hitter who hits mostly fly balls.

ground ball hitter - a hitter who hits mostly ground balls.

line drive hitter - a hitter who hits mostly line drives.

low-ball hitter - a hitter who likes to hit balls pitched low in the strike zone.

gap hitter - a hitter who often hits doubles, but rarely hits home runs; same as doubles hitter.

guess hitter - a mediocre hitter who cannot distinguish between different types of pitches when they are in the air, and only gets hits when he guesses the right pitch beforehand.

opposite-field hitter - a hitter who usually hits the ball the other way; the opposite of a pull hitter.

mistake hitter - A mediocre hitter who can't hit good pitches, but crushes bad pitches right down the middle of the plate.

patient hitter - A hitter who draws a lot of walks.

pinch hitter - a hitter hitting in place of another player, as a substitute.

power hitter - a hitter who hits many home runs.

pull hitter - a hitter who always pulls the ball, hitting it toward left field if he is right-handed, or toward right-field if he is a lefty.

slap hitter - a hitter who sacrifices power for batting average, not trying to hit the ball hard but only trying to put it in play

singles hitter - a hitter who has a high average, but only hits singles.

spray hitter - a type of line drive hitter who hits the ball to all fields.

strikeout hitter - a hitter who often strikes out

switch hitter - a hitter who can bat both left-handed and right-handed
