The Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees was founded in
1995 as a result of the merger between two of the nation's oldest
textile unions pInternational Ladies' Garment Workers' Union] (ILGWU) and the
Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU). In
2001 the
Laundry and Dry Cleaning International Union (LDCIU) merged with UNITE! as well. This brought the total number of members represented by the
union to over 300,000.
UNITE! members work in apparel, textile and related industries; in
industrial laundries; in distribution and retail; in auto parts and auto supply; in
Xerox manufacturing and many other industries in the
United States and
Canada.
UNITE! has been quite active in the anti-
sweatshop movement and was one of the larger
labor unions to participate in the
World Trade Organization protests in
Seattle.
UNITE! is affiliated with the AFL-CIO
