The
kengamine is the part of the
tawara which is above the clay floor of a
sumo dohyo. The tawara are almost-buried bales of
straw, marking off parts of the dohyo such as the fighting ring and the edge of the platform. All in all there are 52 tawara imbedded in the floor of the dohyo platform:
- 20 make up the ring - the shobudawara.
- 28 make up the edge of the platform - the kadodawara.
- 4 mark the corners - agedawara.
So, when you watch sumo on
TV, the part of the tawara you can see are the kengamine.
