Coined from
narcotourism, necrotourism is the practice of going to a country or state with differing laws on
suicide. There has long been a fear that nations like
The Netherlands, with their very
liberal laws on the issue, will attract people who simply want to
off their inconvenient older
relatives. When
Oregon passed its 1994
Death With Dignity Act, opponents expressed concerns that suicidal people would flood the state.
The well-known
avolition of severely
depressed people, coupled with the limited mobility of the
terminally ill, makes necrotourism more of a
bogeyman than a real phenomenon.
