economics, the total value of a nation's annual output of
goods and
services (
gross national product) minus the value of
capital goods used up in the production of this output (
depreciation). Thus, it is the amount of output a nation could consume without reducing the stock of economic
capital and therewith the future
production possibilities of the nation.
