A
chair mounted on two
curved rails so that it is possible to rock the chair. Rocking chairs are
traditionally made from
wood, but can be made from
metal. They can also be
armchairs placed on rails.
Rocking on a
rocking chair is very
relaxing. You rock by pushing the chair lightly back with your feet.
Much imagery is associated with rocking chairs, such as a grandmother knitting on the front porch or a mother rocking a new-born by the fire. As a rocked cradle soothes a babe, rocking on a rocking chair soothes the rocker. For me, rocking produces a feeling of contentment, timelessness, and well-being.
An offshoot of the rocking chair is the rocking horse, an old-fashioned popular children's toy.
