One of several species of
fish of genus
Oreochromis or
Tilapia, native to
Africa, now surpassing
trout in total volume sold worldwide.
Aquaculture of this fish is rampant. They will eat a variety of food sources, from
insects to
rice paddy chaff. They tolerate a wide range of
salinities,
reproduce many times a year, and they
tolerate tight
growing conditions. If large fish are desired, overgrowth must be controlled. Tilapia will outflourish the available food and oxygen, and thus limit fish size.
They taste like flounder.
