Conductor; born April 5, 1908 in
Salzburg.
Educated at
Salzburg Gymnasium, Salzburg Mozarteum,
Vienna Musikakademie.
Spent a great deal of his life as music director of the
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a position which he filled after
Furtwangler died in 1954.
His career with the BPO spanned 35 years (1954-1989); during this time he also had a recording career with
EMI and served as Director of the
Vienna State Opera.
Founded the film company Telemondial and
Salzburg Easter Festival.
Karajan was a contemporary and inspiration to many of the greatest conductors of our time, including
Keith Lockhart,
Andrew Litton,
Seiji Ozawa, and
Sir Georg Solti.
Died two months after resigning conductorship of the BPO in July, 1989.
