Gorgoroth is a
desert area in
J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional land of
Mordor.
It lies towards the north west of the land, between out-thrust arms of the
Ered Lithui and
Ephel Duath mountains. The name means 'Place of very great dead', which is rather apt, as the Dark Lord
Sauron has his tower,
Barad-dur located in the east of Gorgoroth.
Frodo Baggins and
Sam Gamgee crossed this land on the way to
Mount Doom, which lies about in the centre of this area.
