Similar to a
localized geek dialect, but used by a much larger population segment, and thus much more standarized.
A standard geek dialect is also similar to an industry standard - there are certain accepted phrases and certain
buzzwords that are used by those that speak, write, or understand the dialect. One interesting phenominon of the SGD is the "
Pronunciation Artifact Syndrome", which affects the LGD to a lesser extent due to the rarity of LGD users meeting in a real life situation.
SGDs usually revolve around large, multi-faceted communities such as the gaming community, the open source community, and the overclocking community. This is a marked contrast to LGDs which typically are spawned by much smaller communities such as
lanparties,
websites,
forums,
newsgroups,
quake clans,
bulliten board systems, and
user groups.
