Newfanese is a Newfy (Newfoundlander) term for the unique dialect of English they speak. Among the younger generation of Newfies, this dialect isn't actually used (although their accent is unique to Newfoundland also), but the older fisher folk of the island still go back and forth in this amusing, if almost incomprehensible dialect. It has links to 17th century English style, and I have a friend who swears she has heard people using phrases that's she's only heard elsewhere in Shakespeare. Newfoundland has its own large volume which describes in detail words, phrases and constructions native to Newfoundland, which most schools there have somewhere in their library. (By the way, they pronounce their province "Newf'ndland" and don't like it when people say
"Newf'ndl'nd".)
