A musician to whom King David gave major responsibility in the worship at the tabernacle in Jerusalem, Asaph was the son of Berechiah, a Levite and titular ancestor of the guild of musicians known as the sons of Asaph. Twelve of the Psalms (50 and 73 to 83) and linked to Asaph, perhaps written by him or composed in his style.
When David brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem, he placed the musical services in the reestablished tabernacle under Asaph, Heman, and Ethan, each representing one of the three great Levitical clans. These three sang and sounded cymbals as the ark was brought to the city. In the dedication service, Asaph led the musicians "to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel" (1 Chr. 16:4).
