Your ebony jacket made you look pale
like an orphan in winter
my dress was made out of silk
it was gray
we lived in a cage and we left the door open
and a sadness came like ice to a cave
spring became summer
a cold hard madness grew like crystals
until it bound our hands and our feet
wrapped around our heads
and our throats
and we choked
and when we were found
the cage was still open
you were still wearing the ebony jacket
I was still wearing the gray silk dress
and still they wonder
why you and I couldn’t save each other
from freezing to death in the middle of summer.
