An informal social gathering around coffee
"… an impromptu get-together with friends and catch up over a cup of coffee or tea, and sweet treats."
—German Foods
Of course the Germans have a word for it, derived from a root meaning of 'gossip, chatter'. Kaffeklatsch was a way for (originally) women to gather over a cup of coffee to exchange social news. When i was very little my mother's circle used to hold coffee mornings that fitted this description; the women would gather to chat about local news happenings, keep abreast of developments in the Girl Scout movement (Mum was involved with the Brownies as one of the leaders). As I was but a wee lad I would be hauled to these events, to watch and listen as the ladies would drink coffee, knit, sew and occasionally kvetch about their husbands or children.
The kaffeklatsch concept has always been a part of coffee culture. The Penny University was the result of the learnèd gathering to discuss affairs of politics, literature and science, and people would continue to gather in cafes or homes to share the goss over a coffee or two, and can still be seen in groups large and small. Even our homeless car camping group has an hour every morning and evening to chat about things, exchange news and the day's experience, and of course, there is always coffee.
