Baseball Mogul is a series of games for Windows-compatible PCs developed by SportsMogul, formerly Infinite Monkey Systems. Since Baseball Mogul I, 99, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 versions have been released, each sporting minor updates and new rosters. The 2004 edition allows you to start from any year since 1900, using the included Lahman Database, while the 2005 edition added an amateur draft and a detailed Transactions screen, as well as all new art.

Baseball Mogul is unlike World Series Baseball or High Heat in that you don't actually play the games themselves; you're the team's owner and General Manager. You build the stadium, trade the players, and sign the free agents.

Mogul isn't as complex as competitors like Out of the Park Baseball or PureSim. It doesn't, for instance use lefty-righty splits, or have you sign managers. On the other hand, it's much easier to get into, and sports a very clean interface.

It's not without its faults, however. If you're a stathead like I am, you may be disappointed to know that it doesn't save all-time records for players; once a player retires his stats are no longer available, unless he makes the Hall of Fame. I just save after every season, but there is also a third party utility available as freeware. Another problem is that players automatically retire at 45. While there aren't many players who go that long, it'd be nice to have the opportunity for a guy like Nolan Ryan or Hoyt Wilhelm to make it.

Baseball Mogul is a bit of an acquired taste, but all-in-all is a fun series. The current version can be purchased and downloaded online at www.sportsmogul.com, and is carried in a limited fashion at Gamestop and other retailers for $20.
