The common dog is no longer referred to as canis familiaris, but as canis lupus familiaris. It is now generally accepted that the domestic dog is genetically the same species as the grey wolf.

Other canine species, such as the coyote and jackal, are more distant genetically (about 4%), but can still produce viable offspring from matings with canis lupus / canis lupus familiaris.

Hyenas are right out. They're more closely related to cats and mongooses than dogs.
