Software in the Public Interest
SPI is a non-profit organization which tries to propagate the ideas of "Open" (as in "Open Source") soft- and hardware.
They are the owners of the trademark for Open Source, Open Hardware, and Debian.
The people behind SPI:
President - Ian Jackson
Vice-President - Martin Schulze
Secretary - Nils Lohner
Treasurer - Darren Benham
At least three out of these four people are actively involved in the Debian project. I'm not sure about Mr. Lohner.
